The song Gloomy Sunday aka The Hungarian Suicide song, is cursed, so legend has it, that if you listen to it, you might just end up killing yourself. Sounds like the plot to a J-Horror film doesn't it? Composer Rezso Seress wrote the song after his girlfriend left him, so the story goes, it was said that his friend and poet Laslzo Javor wrote the sad tune's lyrics. The lyrics were later translated into English by Sam M. Lewis, Lewis's translation must have been too wrist slitting inducing so he had to add another set of lyrics to give it somewhat of a happy ending.
The fear of listeners committing suicide was real, it was so real that the song was banned in England for decades, the BBC only allowed the instrumental version to air because the lyrics were too upsetting.
I've listened to it and while it is beautiful and sad, I've heard sadder songs. Like....
The sound of Silence makes me want to curl up into a ball, to me The Sound of Silence is the sound of depression. And here's another song I think is much sadder than Gloomy Sunday.
Roads by Portishead is a real heartbreaker, this is a song one probably shouldn't listen to post breakup if you ever want to get out of bed again. Speaking of Portishead, they are just one of the many different artists who've covered it.
And so has Bjork
But of course no one does it better than Lady Day. Fear not, I have listened to it and I'm still alive, but then again I'm living in an age of antidepressants so I'll be fine.
